Youth & Government
Teen Leadership Program
Guided by the motto Democracy Must Be Learned By Each Generation, YMCA Youth & Government builds values-based leadership and civic engagement in Anaheim’s youth in order to strengthen participation in our democracy.
Youth & Government is an integral part of the YMCA movement. Across California, the program engages middle school and high school youth each year in programs emphasizing civic involvement. Our efforts build, strengthen and encourage life assets and positive character traits.
Each year, more than 3,000 student delegates, representing 100 California YMCAs, meet in Sacramento to experience political life first-hand. The program builds self-confidence and public speaking skills.
The hands-on programs of Youth & Government provide positive opportunities and experiences for youth. Participants strengthen their communities by becoming active and responsible contributors who are inspired to lead and become empowered to create meaningful change.
During this year-long leadership program, a group of Anaheim students team up to write a bill, conduct research, lobby for votes, hold mock elections, and debate their bill on the Senate and Assembly floors at our State Capitol. Youth & Government is the only youth program allowed to use state legislative and judicial chambers.
Participants meet Tuesday Nights from 6:00pm-7:30pm at the YMCA Main Office.
Program cost: $1150 (some additional travel costs not included)
Weekly meetings begin Sept. 4th, 2018 and continue through mid February at the YMCA main office
