How long have you been volunteering? 19 years – Served over 2300 hours as a volunteer with the basketball program.
Out of all the community organizations that offer volunteer opportunities, what attracted you to the Anaheim Family YMCA’s Basketball Program? Living in Anaheim, I came across a YMCA Program Guide and noticed an ad for basketball program. I signed up my 5 year old son I asked him if I should volunteer to referee. He said no, because I didn’t have a striped shirt and so I became a coach instead.
What is the most fulfilling part about being a volunteer coach? The most fulfilling part is seeing the players that have never played before and watching their “A-HA!” moments happen before my eyes. When you start coaching, you teach these kids the fundamentals, and the moments from when all of a sudden they start to understand the role they have as a player on the team and start incorporating their new found skills is such a wonderful feeling.
What would you say to someone that may be interested in taking an active role and volunteer for the Anaheim Family YMCA? It’s a great opportunity for you to get out in the community and help mold the kids into great players. The YMCA volunteer coaches are truly a family and I really enjoy every moment with the Y, families and kids.
Is there a feel good story that you’d like to share about your experience as a volunteer? As a volunteer, what sums it up is just seeing the kids that I’ve coached over the past years and graduate from the program who now are taking an active role and give back as volunteer coaches. Being able to know that you had a part in the way that they’re paying it forward, it’s a good feeling to have.
