In March, when COVID-19 took the country by storm, we paused all programming to keep participants, volunteers and staff safe. However, we knew that this, in combination with many school district closures, would potentially lead to food insecurities within the community. Many families depend on free meals provided by schools and after-school programming to feel confident that their children are not going to bed hungry.
As a Community Organization, we knew we had to uphold our promise to our kids and our families that we would serve as a reliable resource for them in times of need. Within the first few days, we had provided a few hundred free meals. Within the next few weeks, we had expanded to over 15 locations in the community. Last Friday, July 31st, we served our One-Millionth Meal.
While the circumstances and outcomes surrounding COVID-19 have been frightening and strenuous for everyone, it has also reaffirmed the Anaheim Family YMCA’s commitment to strengthening the community and addressing and catering to the needs of our friends and neighbors.
We are forever grateful for the people and organizations who have helped us reach this milestone.
