YMCA Summer Swim Lessons

Canyon High School, Anaheim Hills

At the Y, swim lessons save lives. Youth learn not only how to have fun learning to swim, they gain lifelong confidence in and out of the water. Trained YMCA staff teach essential swimming and water safety skills to youth ages infant-17 years in a fun and positive environment. Adult classes are available at select locations.

Participants can register for as many summer sessions as they please. Sessions run for 8 days and classes are 35 minutes long.

Swim Class Descriptions

  • Water Babies

    Ages 6 months to 3 years   Price: $52

    Classes are taught as a combined class with parent accompanying the child in the water. Skills are introduced at the child’s development level and build on each other as the child progresses. Parents learn basic teaching skills. (Adult required in water)

  • Pikes

    (Tots 1): Ages 3 to 5 years   Price: $56

    Orients preschool-aged children to the aquatic environment and helps them acquire rudimentary level aquatic skills. Teaches water entry & exit skills, underwater exploration, floating, glide, and combined water movement skills & water safety skills. (Participants grouped by ability)

  • Rays

    (Tots 2)   Price: $56

    Is designed for those that have already done Pikes previously and are more skilled and confident in the water.

  • Poliwog

    (Level 1): Ages 6 to 8 years   Price: $48

    Beginner level for those uncomfortable or inexperienced in the water. Teaches basic water skills including gliding with face in water, floating, and kicking.

  • Guppy

    (Level 2): Ages 6 to 13 years   Price: $48

    For children able to swim 20 feet without a flotation device. Teaches swimming on front, back and side, and taking breath while swimming.

  • Minnow

    (Level 3): Ages 6 to 13 years   Price: $48

    For children able to swim 15 yards on front and back, without a flotation device. Teaches front crawl with rotary breathing, backstroke, sidestroke, and beginning breaststroke.

  • Fish

    (Level 4): Ages 7 to 14 years   Price: $48

    For children able to swim 25 yards front crawl with rotary breathing, back crawl, sidestroke and rudimentary breaststroke. Refines breast stroke, teaches butterfly, open turns and improves other strokes.

  • Flying Fish

    (Level 5): Ages 7 to 14 years   Price: $48

    For children able to swim 50 yards front crawl with rotary breathing, back crawl, sidestroke and rudimentary breaststroke. Further refines breast stroke, butterfly, open turns and improves other strokes.

  • Shark

    (Level 6): Ages 7 to 14 years  Price: $48

    For children able to swim 50 yards front crawl with rotary breathing, back freestyle and backstroke. Further enhances strokes so student swims with more ease, efficiency, power, and smoothness over greater distances.

  • Pre-Swim

    Ages 11+   Price: $48

    Stroke, technique and endurance. Must have completed Level 5 or equivalent; introduction to concept of team and competitive swimming

  • Water Polo

    Ages 8+   Price: $48

    Introduction to Water Polo. Designed to introduce the fundamentals of water polo; teaching the necessary skills required to begin playing competitive water polo, including passing, dribbling, shooting, treading water, head-up swimming, basic rules, and conditioning.

  • Adults

    Ages 18+   Price: $48

    Intro to Basic Fundamental Aquatics Skills in a supportive environment, adults learn the fundamentals of swimming or perfect stroke technique. Instructors tailor swim instruction to fit each individual needs. Prerequisite: none

  • Junior Lifeguards

    Ages 11-14

    Students will learn the skills and information necessary to qualify for the Lifeguard Training Program and will receive instruction in First Aid, Adult CPR, ARC Level 6 Lifeguard Readiness, and Water Safety Instructor Aide. Portions of the class allow students to qualify for Boy & Girl Scout Merit badges. Books will be provided for class use only, but can be purchased for an additional fee. This course does not satisfy the California state requirements necessary to be a lifeguard. Level 5 skills or higher preferred.
