Thirteen members of the Anaheim Family YMCA staff and board of directors headed to Nashville, Tennessee on July 27 to July 30 for the 2006 General Assembly of YMCAs. Hosted by the YMCA of USA every five years, the General Assembly brings together more than 5,000 YMCA staff and volunteers to inspire, educate and foster collaborative relationships. Famous speakers at the event included renowned talk show host and human behavior expert Dr. Phil, Emmy award-winning commentator Cokie Roberts, TIME Magazine’s “Most Promising Young Leader” Tavis Smiley and inspirational author Max Lucado. Dr. Phil, who shared his story of growing up with the YMCA and coaching his sons’ sports teams, said his relationships with mentors from the Y was instrumental in his success. To the YMCA professionals, he said, “We are not raising children, we are raising adults.” With educational workshops, musical entertainment and important networking opportunities, the 2006 General Assembly was a memorable experience for the Anaheim Family YMCA’s representatives, which included: YMCA staff Paul Andresen, Joan Ring, Kathy Bates, Laura Parris, Karla Sherman, Tina Coca, Joanne Ament, Donald Cato, Cynthia Wilson and Sheanna Overhuls; and YMCA board members Carol Bostwick, Rich Martin and Kay Carpenter.
