Youth Sports Essay Winners
Basketball players reflect on the value of good sportsmanship.
The results of the Youth Sports Summer 2006 Character Development essay contest are in! The Anaheim Family YMCA presented awards to 15 youth in the Anaheim basketball league and five youth in the Cypress basketball league for their winning essays on the topic: “Describe how you used the four pillars of character this season to display good sportsmanship.”
The YMCA pillars of respect, responsibility, caring and honesty were emphasized all season through coaches’ 15-minute “Take-5” talks with the kids. In addition to learning the finer points of basketball, kids learned the value of teamwork and character.
Essay winners were recognized at an awards night, and received trophies and prize bags. “We are very proud of this year’s essay winners,” said Karla Sherman, youth sports director. “Our kids had a great season of basketball and learned the importance of demonstrating good character both on and off the court.”
Congratulations to the following essay winners!
