Community Needs

Community Needs

The Y has the power to address our community’s most critical needs. Every day, we take on the challenges that shape the future of youth and our community—challenges like closing the academic achievement gap, preventing childhood obesity, and keeping kids safe. Where some see obstacles, we see opportunities.

Safe Spaces, Water Safety, Health, Learning, and Connections

Safe Spaces

THE NEED
Outside of school, kids don’t always have a safe place to play and learn. This puts them at risk for crime, gangs, substance abuse, dropping out of school, and more.

OUR IMPACT
After the school bell rings, the Y kicks into action with programs, like Anaheim Achieves, Youth Sports, Teen Leadership, and more. Each day, the Anaheim Family YMCA offers 7,000+ children and teens a safe environment with caring adults so they can be themselves, learn and make friends.

Water Safety

THE NEED
No child’s life should be ever be taken by the water. Drowning is the second leading cause of accidental death in children ages 1-14.

OUR IMPACT
Formal swim lessons reduce the risk of drowning. The Anaheim Family YMCA engages 5,000+ kids in invaluable water safety and swim skills each year. This helps them to be confident and safe both in and around water.

Health

THE NEED
No child should go to bed hungry, eat poorly or not have the opportunity to be active. Yet, one in five kids do not know where their next meal will come from—and social barriers can lead to childhood obesity, chronic disease and poor quality of life.

OUR IMPACT
The Anaheim Family YMCA has numerous programs that teach healthy habits, get kids active and provide healthy snacks and meals to those in need. The Y also works with an array of partners to improve policy to increase access to safe outdoor place spaces, water, fruits and vegetables.

Achievement Gap

THE NEED
Kids from low-income families often start school unprepared and fall further behind each year. This Achievement Gap results in low graduation rates, fewer college entries, and limited job skills.

OUR IMPACT
The Y is helping to close the Achievement Gap through Early Learning Readiness, Anaheim Achieves After-School program, Summer programs and STEM (science, technology, engineering, math). As a result, 10,000+ youth and teens are engaged in reading, are better prepared for school, and are learning 21st century skills.

Connections

THE NEED
If youth and adults don’t have connections to peers and role models, it can lead to apathy, isolation and social issues.

OUR IMPACT
The Anaheim Family YMCA connects people and strengthens family connections through character-building programs, volunteering, mentoring and opportunities to get involved.
