More than 850 residents participated in the recent Activate Anaheim Community Cookout and Fitness Fair at Edison Park.
The event featured numerous healthy activities, including a walk-a-thon, Jazzercise demos, an L.A. Blues Soccer Clinic, an Imagination Playground for youth, Rethink Your Drink classes, martial arts demos, dance performances, health screenings and dozens of booths focused on healthy living.
The cookout was funded by Disneyland Resort and featured an array of nutritious foods, including healthy chicken taco plates served up by Paco’s Tacos. One of Disney’s chefs, Chef Martha Sigala, also autographed DVDs throughout the day that included her soup recipe and healthy cooking tips. In addition, Northgate Market donated fresh fruit.
“What made this event so special is that residents themselves took the lead on planning the entire event,” said Javier Gonzalez, Healthy Communities director for the Anaheim Family YMCA. “Working alongside our Activate Anaheim partners, the community came together to share the importance of healthy living.”
A local Jazzercise instructor also came to share her story and get residents moving. “I’ve lost 78 pounds since I started my classes,” said Roberta Hernandez. “Now I want to help others and show them how important it is to take care of our bodies. Hopefully I inspired my community and made them realize that anything is possible and that they can have fun working out with others.”
Saturday’s event also kicked off Activate Anaheim’s new three-year initiative called “Healthy Eating Active Living”, made possible through support from Kaiser Permanente. The project will engage local residents and organizations in identifying and creating changes that will help make healthy eating and active living a daily part of life.
The Activate Anaheim coalition is led by the Anaheim Family YMCA, and includes Disneyland Resort, the city, Kaiser Permanente, Anaheim City School District, Anaheim Union High School District, Northgate Market and other local organizations.
